Grief is a deep sadness that a person experiences when he or she losses a family member, friend or relative. Coping with the loss of a family member or friend is a challenging process. Even though losing someone is a natural part of life, it is important for the person to know how to overcome the periods of sadness or depression that may occur.
Grief occurs in various stages. During the first stage the person expresses denial and feels isolated. The person denies the loss of the family member or friend as a reality.
The second stage is anger. Anger is directed at the death of the dying or deceased loved one. The person can also go through a bargaining and thinks about ways in which they could have changed the situation and even try to make a deal with God.
The fourth stage is depression. The person experiences sadness and feels regret.
The fifth stage is acceptance. The person is calm during this period and accepts the loss.
